You first read how much my daughter was into her Puppy Place Books and Fairy Books (Rainbow Magic), well now she has moved on and progressed in her reading. Her latest obsession is now with the Humphrey books! Humphrey is a cute little hamster that has all sorts of adventures. My daughter seriously stays up at night with a flashlight and reads these books over and over!
The very first one she read that got her hooked was called Trouble According to Humphrey by, Betty G. Birney. The reading level is for ages 8 and up. This book has 192 pages and gets 5 STARS on Amazon!!! Here is a short synopsis of the book from Amazon:
“Humphrey loves to solve problems for his classmates in Room 26, but he never meant to create one! Golden-Miranda, one of his favorite students, gets blamed when Humphrey is caught outside of his cage while she’s in charge. Since no one knows about his lock-that-doesn’t-lock, he can’t exactly squeak up to defend her. Humphrey really has his paws full when Don’t-Complain- Mandy-Payne and her family stir up more big trouble. Humphrey manages to help Pay-Attention-Art and Sit-Still-Seth and even survives a trip to the vet, but can he clear Miranda’s name without giving up his freedom forever?” – Amazon.com
This book is only $5.81 on Amazon right now!! What a great gift to get your little one for Valentine’s Day this year, or just a “Because I Love You” gift any day of the year!! What better way to spread your love of reading with your kids than to buy them books that they will LOVE! This book and ALL the Humphrey books are coming highly recommended to you from my 8-year old daughter! They keep her very interested in reading and foster her love of reading as well! She saves her allowance to buy these books! Make sure you check them out for your little ones. They are gender neutral, and I’m sure my son will enjoy these one day as well!
You can check out more about them here on Amazon (these are a few, but not all):

Very cute books! And I love that they are gender neutral because as a teacher it is essential to find something that can suit everyone (or at least most). I have to check these out ! Would make an awesome gift to a teacher’s classroom! Thanks.

My kindergartener is already reading chapter books. These seem like they would be appropriate, yes?
Yes, as long as you think your child is at a 2nd-3rd grade reading level! =) AWESOME that your kindergartener is reading chapter books!!!
I haven’t heard of Humphrey. They sound really cute. Has your daughter read any of the Beverly Cleary Ralph S. Mouse books? They are cute, though Ralph is a bit disrespectful at times.
well humphrey does look cute. 🙂 I bet my kids would love these too!
awww! never heard of humphrey! Sounds adorable! I will have to check it out for my kids!
Thank you SO much for the suggestion! My daughter also went from Rainbow Magic to Puppy Place and we were trying to find another series for her to try. She’s not interested in a lot of the other children’s chapter book series we’ve seen at the library. This sounds perfect!! Please keep the suggestions coming … and the track back feature on the Puppy Place post was so helpful as it led me to your post on Humphrey …
