As a former Middle School teacher, I can tell you the number one thing about reading is that kids need to be interested in the material they are reading. I really love when books have a series you can follow, because not only do you get excited for the next book in the series to come out, but you also really connect with the characters in the books. Authors, Patti Wheeler and Keith Hemstreet, have created such a series! It is the Travels with Gannon & Wyatt. The books in this series are fictional adventures that are based on the real-life expeditions of twin brothers, Gannon and Wyatt. This series has three books already, and I’m sure more area in the making. I have a daughter that is 9-years old and she reads above grade level, so she was able to read and comprehend most of what was in these books with just a little assistance from me. Some of the pronunciations of names were hard for her, or if they were speaking a different language. These books are geared for kids ages 9-12.
Her favorite book out of the three in the series was Egypt. This books is actually coming out in January 2014, so we got to review it as a sneak peek! Everyone in my family gravitates to the Egyptian history and culture, so it was fun to read this with her. In this particular book, Gannon and Wyatt set off on a journey to Egypt. These twin brothers study with archeologist Dr. Mohammed Aziz and join him on an adventure to find the long lost tomb of the Pharaoh Cleopatra. Cleopatra (whose name was hard for my daughter to read) apparently had some treasures and ancient secrets. The twin brothers have a rough time trying to reach their goal of finding Cleopatra, because they meet many obstacles along the way. The story kept you wanting to read more and wanting to see if the boys would find what they needed to possibly make a discovery that could rewrite history. It definitely held our attention, and we loved being with Gannon and Wyatt on this journey! My 6-year old son was interested in listening to the story as well. I was actually a little skeptical at first as to whether or not my daughter would want to read these (from the cover they seem geared more towards boys), so I was pleasantly surprised when she gave them a chance and actually got engaged with reading them and even liked them! I guess you truly can’t judge a book by it’s cover!
I am a huge history buff, so I hope this is inspiring her to have a love of history as well. The other two books out Botswana (May 2013) and Great Bear Rainforest (October 2013) are great as well. I would recommend this series to boys and girls alike that love adventure stories. You should order the first two books now for your kids for this holiday season! I’m sure after they read them they will be wanting to get Egypt in January 2014 when it comes out! When my kids get excited about a book series and beg me to buy them the next one, it makes me feel proud as a parent! I love instilling the love of reading in my kids! Reading takes you on adventures, feeds the brain, and helps to get you where you want to be in life! There is nothing greater. These books are available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon and local bookstores. And don’t miss out on this special giveaway: Three Kindle Fires are being given away on the Travels with Gannon and Wyatt Facebook page in November!

My greatest travel adventure was when I was a teenager and we flew (via three varying sized planes) to the windward island of Dominica on a mission trip. We surfed, clif “dove” (more like jump for me) and saw stars like we had never seen before. But the best part was ministering to the kids. The smiles and love they had for us was something that has yet to be matched. It makes you appreciate things on a whole new level. I only wish my kids could experience something like that one day.

In 2006, I flew on a plane for the first time, with my 5 month old to Alaska!! Took like 14 hours to get there. It was a true adventure for the both of us. Someone was truly looking down on me, to make me brave enough to do it and have my sweet baby be good the whole way there and back. FYI, tacking the plane bathroom with a baby is no fun!!!
When I took a bus to Arizona it took eleven hours to there from California instead of five hours. The bus had a AC problem so we had to stop half way getting there. I was so sore from the travel to there because I’ve got Fibromyalgia. I told my daughter that never again I’ll take the bus. I’ll rather drive there than in a bus any time. But one thing I loved I seen my grand babies and they we’re so happy to see me. It’s a Blessing for me seen those little brats.
