My four-year-old-son has relatively recently become a big brother. He is now embracing his role of being “Mommy’s Big Helper.” He has been so good about little things like grabbing me a diaper, filling up the dog’s bowl with food, even carrying in the groceries. Another time he likes to ‘help out’ is during dinner time. He loves cooking and is always so proud of his culinary creations.
Now that the weather is nice, we love grilling out. We frequently have kabobs on the menu. We love them because they are quick, you can make them ahead of time, and they are usually very healthy. Unfortunately, my son is not quite a fan of all those fresh veggies and grilled meats. He is, however, a fan of chicken nuggets and fruit! So, on my weekly shopping trip to Walmart, we purchased some Tyson Chicken Nuggets and some fresh cantaloupe; two of my son’s dietary staples.
While I prepped our grown-up kabobs and threw the nuggets in the oven, I set my man to work at the kitchen table with some thinly sliced cantaloupe. He used these cute flower cookie cutters that I found on a recent trip to the craft store, to make fun fruit flowers.Once his nuggets were ready and cooled, I showed him how to build his own kabobs. I gave him a model and he followed the pattern, and came up with a few of his own, to make his meal.
This was such a fun way to get my son involved in prepping a family meal. You can see I was even able to stick a few green beans in there. And, I can proudly say that he ate every bite. They were such a hit, we are thinking of bringing a smaller scale version of these to our community Fourth of July party. Wouldn’t they be a cute kid friendly finger food with a yummy nugget sandwiched between two star-shaped melons? We can’t wait to try this again!

I’ve never tried chicken and canteloupe. I was thinking cheese on there might be yummy too!

Oh my, that look like so much fun to do with the kiddos. I know with the fruit on the stick & the chicken that was a win-win dinner.

We recently discovered that the kids are more willing to try new foods when we put them on a stick. Such a cute and easy way to have a fun meal! I never thought about putting fruit with the meat. Great idea!
It’s funny that you shared this because I recently discovered that these nuggets are something that BOTH my kids will actually eat 🙂 I’m going to pin this idea so that I can remember it the next time they have nuggets for lunch. Super Thanks for sharing!
What a cute idea, I love that you shaped the cantaloupe!
