SIMPLE Service Project for #JennieOCFK

Educating Young Kids to “Make The Switch” Thanks to Jennie-O

As you read in my first Jennie-O post, my family decided to make the switch from red meat to turkey products. My son and I shopped at Walmart and picked up some products to try out. It was great substituting Jennie-O turkey for our usual red meat staples. We used ground turkey instead of ground beef in our spaghetti, we used smoked turkey sausage for our sausage and peppers dish, and we tried the turkey and gravy instead of steak for another meal. We really enjoyed all the Jennie-O products we tried, and in fact we did not even miss our red meat at all. Also, as I mentioned in my previous post, we saved a lot of money by making the switch as well.  It came to about a $15 – $20 savings from our usual weekly shopping run.

All of our food is bought for our weekly shopping trip and our SIMPLE Service project for the preschool! We are all set!

With this extra savings, I was able to purchase products for the SIMPLE Service Project for Champions For Kids. I decided to teach a lesson to preschoolers about the benefits of healthy eating and give them samples of Jennie-O turkey. By partnering with Jennie-O to help Champions For Kids, I was able to bring healthy eating awareness to preschoolers and their families, as well as providing them with healthy products. The SIMPLE Service Project was completed at the Barbara Tufts Cooperative Preschool in Rhode Island, a local cooperative preschool that helps kids of all economic levels be able to attend preschool. For the project, I presented a lesson on healthy eating, I presented a challenge to families to eat healthy, and I also provided families with a Jennie-O products to start them on their way to a healthier lifestyle.

The lesson I presented started with discussing healthy food options and “not-so healthy” food options. It was good to see that kids really did know the difference! They had great ideas and were eager to participate. We concluded together that some foods like red meat, sweets, and dairy, are all okay when consumed in moderation. We also decided that eating healthier options like turkey more often is a good decision for overall better health.

Next, I had them try samples of the Jennie-O turkey and gravy. Some kids ate it by itself and others ate it in a roll like a turkey sandwich. Most all of them were adventurous and tried it. Many even finished all of their food! I also read two books to the kids while they were eating. I read about the body and how healthy eating affects the body, and I also read about things to help keep the Earth a better place for all. They enjoyed both books and asked many questions.

Finally, I gave all the kids a pack of Jennie-O Smoked Turkey Sausages to take home to have their parents cook for them for dinner. They were super excited to get this, and I saw some kids talking to their parents when they were picked up and telling them why turkey is so healthy. It was very cute. I sent home a “challenge” to parents as well with the sample of sausage. Below is what was sent home on the form:

“Make the Switch” with Jennie-O!

Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death for women? Did you know you can increase your heart health by reducing the amount of red meat in your diet?

I took the heart healthy “Make the Switch” Challenge from Jennie-O and replaced my red meat with turkey for overall better health! It’s not only better for my health, but also better on our finances. I challenge YOU to “Make the Switch” and see if you can go red meat free for 2 weeks!

Red meat in moderation is fine, but it’s healthier to replace some of those meals with turkey. Can you do it?

Here’s a sample of Jennie-O Smoked Turkey Sausage for you and your family to try out Jennie-O’s great products. We love eating sausage and peppers for a meal, and this was a healthier alternative for us. It’s pretty cool to see how many of your dishes you can substitute turkey in for red meat! Turkey tacos, turkey burgers, turkey meatballs, you name it! Have fun and “Make the Switch!”
