Build a Healthy Meal with a Sandwich
~ Incorporate Grains Into Your Diet with Bread ~

Grains with Mama Luvs Books ~ National Bread Month

We all know grains needs to be incorporated into your diet to live a full well-balanced lifestyle. Bread is a great way to get in those healthy grains, and what better way to create a well-balanced meal than an old-fashioned sandwich? I could eat a sandwich for every meal! You can make just about anything into a sandwich, and the right bread makes all the difference. Did you know this is the 250th anniversary of the sandwich? How cool is that?

“The beloved food form was born in England in 1762, when Sir John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, didn’t want to put his cards down in the midst of a marathon game of poker so requested his meat be served to him between two slices of bread. With Americans now consuming over a billion sandwiches a year, sandwiches may in fact be our most popular national dish,” says Go with the Grain.

We eat just about every type of bread in our household. We love bread. At any given time you will see our refrigerator stocked with various breads. We love difference types for different meals! I’m pretty sure my kids could live off of bread and cheese. Grilled cheese is probably their favorite. My hubby and I like ours a little bit fancier.

My hubby and I like a little more in our sandwiches! Check out the sandwich we created below! We chose the Hearty White Pepperidge Farm Bread, spread on a little bit of butter on one side of each slice, and then added some CastleWood meats (turkey and salami) with Munster cheese and some Dijon mustard. We put the sandwich in our little Panini Press and the masterpiece sandwich was created! Yum! An Italian-style panini sandwich full of flavor in minutes! It was delicious!

We added some sweet potato chips and edamame for a well-rounded meal! It was a savory and healthy meal made in minutes! Sandwiches are one of the easiest, most versatile and convenient ways to make a healthy meal for individuals or families. Bread is the most important ingredient. It is the foundation of a great meal! And the great thing is you can incorporate bread into almost any meal of the day. The complex carbohydrates in bread and other grain-based foods provide lasting energy the human body needs on a daily basis. This is important for your growing kids too! That’s why we pack sandwiches into our kids’ lunches every day! They usually love salami and cheese or peanut butter and jelly!

  • The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend eating six one ounce servings of grain foods each day.
  • Grain-based foods like bread, buns, bagels, tortillas and crackers are not only healthy, they’re convenient and affordable.

We love bread in our household and eat it with many meals for a well-balanced diet. Make sure you and your kids are getting the essential vitamins and minerals you need each day! Strive to be healthy and get in your grains with an old-fashioned sandwich!

  14. I agree with you on adding sandwiches to our diets more for health. I think our tastes have gotten so mature that we want elaborate, but sandwiches can contain such goodness. I love pairing something on whole wheat with a hearty veggie soup! I made grilled cheese on whole wheat with a homemade tomato basil last week and the kids loved it! But they also love adding spinach, or even just a cucumber sandwich.
