Our Trip to New Hampshire & Maine:
~ Creating Our Historic Travels Board with Elmer’s ~
As you’ve seen in my recent posts, we just took a trip to New Hampshire and Maine this past week. It was amazing to visit new States and see new sites! We were able to go to amusement parks, see old historic Main Streets, check out old restaurants, see lighthouses, and visit L.L. Bean which was celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary this year! I am a big history buff and taught social studies at both the elementary and middle school levels. My dad and mom took our family on many trips to historic places while growing up, and that really had an impact on my love for history. I want to instill that love in my kids as well.
I am very lucky right now, as I live in Rhode Island. There is so much history around us and in the New England area. I was so excited for this recent trip because I knew not only would we be relaxing and having fun, but we would also be exploring an area rich with history. It’s awesome to see when my kids get excited about it too and ask great questions! The entire trip they were definitely interested in their surroundings!
We thought a great way to remember our trip and document some of the fantastic historical places we saw would be to make a project together. Not only will it be something we can keep, but it’s also a great way to get the kids involved in thinking and crafting during the summer months when they are off from school. As an educator I know how important it is to keep kids’ brains challenged over the “summer slump” months!
Making the project was a blast! First my daughter and I shopped at Walmart to get some great items for our project! We found an Elmer’s Tri-Fold Display Board as the main component to decorate with our pictures and memories! We also found cool Elmer’s Glitter Glue and Elmer’s Paint Pens to write and decorate with on the board. Lastly, we decided to print out some pictures at the Photo Shop in Walmart, which we had never done in the store before. I’ve previously ordered online to Walmart and picked them up the next day. Doing it this new way was so easy! We just put our SD card in the machine, chose the pictures we wanted, clicked to print, and the pictures were ready in eight minutes! How cool is that?
When we got home we started on our project! My daughter could hardly contain herself because she was so excited about making this Historic Travels Board. First, here is our “recipe to create a historic board” in case you want to make one too!
Ingredients:
One Elmer’s Tri-Fold Display Board
One pack of Elmer’s Glitter Glue
One pack of Elmer’s Washable Paint Pens
One Bottle of Elmer’s School Glue
One Pack of Construction Paper
One Elmer’s Glue Stick
Two Rolls of Colored/Designed Duct Tape
One Pair of Scissors
One Pack of Printed Out Family Pictures
Two Enthusiastic Kids
One Fun Mom
To start with, we decided it was best to organize what we wanted to write on the board and where we wanted to put our pictures. Once everything was planned out, we got busy making it. My son joined in the fun and helped with using the Elmer’s School Glue, which was nice and easy for a 5-year old to use! Some cool things we did with the Duct Tape and the construction paper were to make little frames around our pictures with them. That was my daughter’s idea and was really fun to make! She was also very creative with the Elmer’s Paint Pens and created her own lobster! The kids were so proud of their final project, which included L.L. Bean’s 100th Anniversary, the Roadster cars from the 1960’s, monuments for soldiers of the Civil War, taverns from the 1700’s, and old lobster restaurants that have been serving fresh lobster since the 1950’s. Being in New England you can find history around every corner!

The teaching aspect you’ve done with your children is amazing and something I hope they’ll remember for years to come. I grew up in Northern Virginia and my numerous trips to DC remain precious memories to me. So glad you all had this time.

What a fun trip and display! As a history and education major who now homeschools all of our vacations include some kind of history component. My kids love exploring museums and forts and historical sites!

I always make photo books on shutter fly when they provide a free code. Another thing I have done with my printer out pictures is to put them in a binder. You can get picture pockets for binders and then the regular page projectors to write up information about each set of pictures. Then decorate the front and and back of the binder. Easier to store 🙂
Right now I am working on a 100 days of summer project with my 2 year old. A list of simple summer activities, taking a picture of him/us doing each one and then making a book of it for him when he gets older 🙂
That is a super cool project. We have some of those project boards, now I am just trying to figure out how to store them for the long haul!
