Savings for You, Your Family and Your Pets
~Walgreens’ Prescription Savings Plan~
The pharmacy that I have been going to for the past three years told me they are not getting as many medications in stock, and that they think there is a possibility they may close. I decided I better look around for a new pharmacy just in case, so I did some research on the Internet. I found a Walgreens that is only two miles from my house, so I thought I might check it out since having a pharmacy close to home is probably a good thing when the little ones get sick unexpectedly late at night. I was reading online about what Walgreens has to offer when I came across their Prescription Savings Plan, #rxsavingsclub. This plan was very exciting to me because not only does it help people with no insurance or with little coverage, but it also helps with covering pets and gives discounts for all Walgreens brand products.
The way the plan works is that you simply purchase a plan (either individual or family) for the year, and it gets you discounts on prescriptions and other Walgreens products (10% off). The plans costs $20 for an individual and $35 for a family. The family plan even includes pets. We already have decent insurance, but our pets are not covered. This could really help us save money, as our cat was diagnosed with Diabetes last year and his medications are very pricey for us.
Jasper, our cat, takes insulin for his Diabetes twice a day. We need to purchase not only the insulin but the needles to inject him as well. This cost is quite pricey, so I am hoping the new plan will help make things a little easier on the wallet.
I also suffer from allergies as you’ve read in past posts, so I also need monthly medications to feel better. I currently take Flonase for my allergies, which seems to work well. I am pretty sure my insurance covers it decently, but I can always check and compare costs.
At Walgreens today, I simply went up to the pharmacy and asked about the Prescription Savings Plan. There was a sign I saw in the store about it, but the pharmacist was very friendly and answered all my questions about the plan. It sounded like it was something I could benefit from, so I decided to sign-up and it was so easy to do. It’s almost like getting a Barnes & Noble membership card where you pay a yearly fee and get discounts for having the membership.
I was worried at first that signing up for the plan might interfere with my current insurance coverage, but I was assured the two are completely separate. They did not even ask for my insurance card when signing up. The pharmacist said when you get a prescription you cannot use both your insurance and the plan. You need to decide which one to use. The good news is that they can look up the information for you so you can see which one is the best deal. The pharmacist being so kind and helpful made me feel even more comfortable about switching to Walgreens.
Also, after I paid the $35 for my family membership, they printed out a coupon for me to get a $25 Walgreens Gift Card if I switch my prescriptions to them. That basically covers the cost of plan, so it’s a win-win situation! Why not sign up and give it a try?
I should get my card in the mail within a week, but the plan went into effect immediately. I could have even used it today! Jasper will need his medications refilled next week, so I will transfer his prescriptions over to Walgreens at that time and see the savings we will get. My kids also had a fun time with me shopping at Walgreens. The store had almost everything there that you need; food, cleaners, a photo center, cosmetics, toys, etc.
We will definitely be visiting Walgreens more often ~ and it’s only two miles away!

I always wondered if you could use it along side your insurance plan, and it’s good to know that you can use it and see which one would save you the most money! My mom has so many prescriptions because she has asthma, diabetes, and a couple other prescriptions for things, so I’m definitely going to pass this information along to her! 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing!
I didnt know people could get pet meds at Walgreens!!! I bought this Rx card a few months ago and totally recommend it too! I am glad you are getting the word out because I have used Walgreens for a bazillion years and they just keep getting better! They have a mobile app for speedy prescriptions and info and a refill reminder phone service. I hold the pharmacy staff at my Walgreens in such high regard for always being friendly, helpful and patient. It looks like your kids love Walgreens as much as mine do! (Mine wants the slushy maker they have there.) Oh – and I LOVE your big bag :0)

I didn’t know you could get pet meds at Walgreens either. Since you also get a discount on Walgreens brand items, I’m sure it will pay for itself many times over. We don’t get many prescriptions in our family but the Walgreens program is certainly one I would try if we needed to.
I may do this just for the pet meds. I have a script for myself that I pay $300 a month for and if I can get it cheaper her.. I will definitely change. Thanks for the link

Love that this will cover pets. My poor dog Ivan was on so many meds before he died, it cost us a small fortune. Even though I would have paid it no matter the cost, it would have been nice to save a little money.

It is really great when you can find a way to save money. I wish the Walgreen’s near where I live were more friendly. My husband and I have a lot of trouble with them. But I still think it is great when a company offers a savings plan.
We already have coverage for our prescriptions, but it may be worth it to switch. I especially like the $25 gift card you get! It would probably be easier on my husband to use the Walgreen’s here in town for his thyroid medication than the Walmart in the next town over.
I’ll have to check and see if I can get my scripts cheaper there. I get a good deal with now, but I’m always up for more savings!
That is so good to know about the Pet meds too!! I wish there was something like this last year when we were getting meds for our pets – a cat in renal failure and a dog with cancer. We got our dogs chemo meds (and an anti-inflammatory for the cancer too) at a regular pharmacy and you are so right, it gets VERY pricey! They’ve both passed, but I will keep this in mind if we ever need to get pet meds from a pharmacy again!
