Helping to Feed The Hungry Children of Rhode Island One Cereal Box at a TIme ~ #PostCFK #CBias #SocialFabric

A Challenge Was Presented….And the Girl Scouts Took It On! “Post: Bowls of Hope”

I am a Girl Scout leader for my daughter’s Brownie Troop and I thought what a great cause for us to be a part of; the Post Bowls of Hope Champions For Kids SIMPLE SERVICE Project (#PostCFK) to raise awareness and support for hungry kids in our community. When I told the troop about the program they were super excited to be a part of it and to help get cereal and healthy foods to donate to those in need. Did you know that most kids in the community that receive free and reduced lunches do not get support during the summer months? Many times the best and healthiest meals of the day for these kids is at school, and during the summer most of them will not receive that support and go hungry or eat unhealthy foods.

The first step was to go to Walmart because one of the activities for the troop included a “Getting Started ~ Ice Cream Party” which would educate the girls, get them psyched about our food drive, and let them try the different Post cereal options. There were many to choose from, and we bought a bunch! Some for our family, some for charity, and some for our party! The Post Challenge for “Bowls of Hope” asks people to Buy 2 Give 1 to help out the community; buy two for your family and buy one for charity! Every little bit helps! Support your community!

We bought everything we need and checked out! The second step was to go to the Brownie Meeting and get the girls excited about helping with this campaign. I decided we would have a little discussion about feeding hungry kids, who they are, how can we help them, and the girls far surpassed my expectations.

The girls were knowledgeable about kids that might be hungry and they were very eager to help out the community. I thought they could each donate a box of Post cereal themselves for the drive, and they decided they could do even better! They wanted to ask kids at the school to help out as well. We thought the more people we could get involved the more we could get for people in need! The girls decided to make signs to hang up all over the school, talk to the principal to make sure it was okay, and promote the food drive on the morning announcements. They got to work quickly making signs and were excited to get them up around the school. I went and checked with the principal and we were cleared to go! The girls were psyched!

After learning about hungry kids and discussing what we would do about it, I thought it was time for a fun surprise! Let’s try out some Post cereals with an Ice Cream Party! The girls were so excited and loved all the cereals they tried. And they sure put some impressive sundaes together. Who knew Post cereals could make for such yummy ice cream sundae toppings?

I am so proud of all my girls! They truly love helping our community. One girl had said, “If I were hungry, I would hope there would be someone out there to help me. That’s why I want to help other people.”
So far the girls have made announcements at school, covered the halls with signs, talked to their friends about why other kids might be hungry during the summer months, and we have been collecting Post brand cereal in collection boxes at the front of the school to take and donate to a local charity, The Sharing Locker, and to the Rhode Island Food Bank. We have another week of collecting, but our goal is 100 boxes! I will also donate some granola bars to go with the cereal as well, which is another great breakfast food. It was on the list of needed items at the food bank.
