#PostCFK Follow-Up ~ Helping Others

This is a quick post to follow-up on our SIMPLE Service project we completed for #PostCFK Post Bowls of Hope campaign. As you read last week, my Brownie Troop was involved with the Post cereal project to collect boxes of Post cereal for those kids in need. After school is out for the summer many kids that depend on free and reduced lunch from school no longer have those services. Many go hungry. Post and Champions for Kids are helping communities to bring cereal to places where kids in need can receive healthy breakfast items. See our journey of learning about hunger, deciding what we could do to help, and our Post Cereal Ice Cream Party HERE.

As you noticed, our goal was to collect 100 boxes of cereal from the school. The girls put up signs, made announcements, and did their best to get donations. It ended up being a difficult time of the school year to collect things since the year is ending soon. Many were focusing on wrapping things up with year end projects and assemblies, so we did the best we could.

The Troop ended up collecting 50 boxes of Post brand cereal. It was only halfway to our goal, but we were proud none the less. As the donations were less than we anticipated, we decided to choose to donate the items to just one local charity, The Sharing Locker. This charity is right in our town, and it serves people from where we live and surrounding communities.

The Sharing Locker

We brought the donations to the charity, and they were very excited to receive our donation. The Sharing Locker provides people with non-pantry items like paper towels, toothpaste, toilet paper, and other necessities; however, they also distribute food, used clothes and books, pet food, and any other donations they receive.

We pulled up with our car full of cereal and they were very thankful for the donation. They said cereal is a wonderful and helpful item to donate, and they also thought it would be gone in about two hours. My daughter and I were so happy that we could make someone’s day better by taking home some healthy cereal for their family. 50 families would be helped today because of our donation. “Mom, it makes me feel good to help other people,” my daughter said. “I’m glad our Troop did this project.” I’m so glad she got to see how nice it is to help others.
