The Delaware Museum of Natural History ~ Hands-On Learning

Delaware Museum of Natural History

It is Spring Break vacation in Rhode Island this week, so on the way to a family wedding I thought it would be fun to do some activities with the kids. I researched and found the Delaware Museum of Natural History on the Internet, so I decided it would be a good pit stop to have some fun and learn a little too! My kids loved the Natural History Museum in DC, so I thought this would be something they would enjoy!

I was right! This is just what they needed after a long drive. The museum had exhibits of animals, shells, environmental awareness, and dinosaurs. We spent about an hour looking around at the exhibits and learning new things. The kids liked touching the dinosaur fossil.

They also really liked the kids’ section where they had hands-on exhibits for the kids to explore. They went in a bat cave, played with stream animals, sat in the eagle’s nest, and dug for fossils.

I think we learned the most from the movie we saw on the way out. They had a mini-movie theater where we sat and watched an episode of Planet Earth. We learned all about trees and how very important they are to the environment. My daughter couldn’t help but think of when we went to see The Lorax and what would happen to the Earth without trees. They were glued to the screen.

My son’s favorite part was visiting the gift shop on the way out. They each got a stuffed animal to remember our fun and adventurous “Mommy & Kids” day.

What Fun and Educational things have you done with your kids lately?

You can visit the museum in Wilmington, DE. For information, check them out on their site, Facebook, or Twitter. A fun stop for you and the kids!

  1. That looks like fun! My daughter is 16 months old so I try to give her lots of experiences- outside (Zoo, Sea World, park, walks, etc), sensory, art, social time, and more! Learning can come from anywhere but museums that have interactive exhibits are such a fun way to learn!

You should try the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News VA if you are out this way. http://www.thevlm.org
They have live animals and four Discovery Centers where children of all ages can play with real objects from nature. They even have a walk through cave with cave animals. My kids especially liked to howl to the red wolves and see if they would howl back!

  27. The more natural history museums I visit, the more I appreciate how each one is unique and different. I haven’t been to this one yet, but it looks great! I love how it includes lots of hands on activities and a movie.
