Girl Scouts Celebrate 100 Years!!!

Girls Scouts of Rhode Island Celebrate in Honor of 100 Years of Scouting

Some of you may know I am a Brownie Leader for my daughter’s troop here in Rhode Island. She loves it, so I continue to volunteer and work hard to run the troop. I’m sure it’s something we will always have memories of, and activities like we did this past weekend will for sure be memorable for her. In celebration of 100 years of scouting in the United States, the East Greenwich, North Kingstown, and Jamestown chapters planned a full day of activities for the girls to let them see how scouting has progressed throughout the year. It was held in Kingston, RI at Camp Hoffman.

They started with the traditional flag ceremony, and then split the girls (almost 350 of them) up into stations to rotate around. We got to sing campfire songs, play basketball in bloomers old-school style, tour the camp museum, learn about camping throughout the years, do some arts and crafts, interview Girl Scouts that have been scouting for over 30 years, watch a fashion show of uniforms throughout the decades, and of course have a “swap session.”

I think the swaps were the most fun for the girls. Our troop made peace signs out of beads and twisties, and they seemed to be quite popular during the swap. The girls got to go around with their 25 swaps and exchange them for other swaps from other troops. The goal is to try and have 25 all different swaps on your lanyard at the end. It was a blast!

I thought the fashion show was pretty cool. It was nice to see my Brownie uniform from the 80’s go by! I remember it too well. The next activity for our troop is an outdoor day. This will just be for our troop though, so a bit more quiet and relaxing. I still have memories from being in Brownies and of my mom being the leader. I’m sure at age 7 my daughter will retain some of these memories and at least have a good feeling when remembering scouting.

What Activities Are You Involved With?

  1. Oh–I remember being a Brownie and a Girl Scout!! My Dad used to help me understand and get a lot of the nature badges!! I went to GS camp also but since I didn’t like camp in general and it rained the entire time———but I only have good memories in general as I am sure your daughter will!!

It was a great event! I was a girl scout when I was young and stayed with it until I was a Cadette. Now I am a leader for my daughter’s troop as well and really enjoy all of our adventures!

  5. How awesome is that!? Love the celebration and the activities they participated in. I currently run a local mom’s group that my kids have been in since my son was 7 months old. I can’t wait to “upgrade” to brownie or boy scout leader!

  6. I am involved with waaaay too many things, lol. Now that my kids are getting old enough I’m sure there will be more. I’ll probably have to cut back.

  7. That sounds like it was so much fun! I was never a girl scout. That’s really neat that it’s been around for 100 years.

  8. what a cool day. I loved my brownie/girl scout years. I learned a lot and made lots of great friends. I think this kind of celebration of girls is fantastic. And th fashion show must have been way fun! Hope you had fun!
