True Confessions of a Reality TV Show Junkie……

Hi, my name is Kristin, and I am a Reality TV junkie.  Reality TV is my crack.  I’m addicted.  I admit it.  I’m sure it sounds pathetic, but after a day of tending to the kids, the house, the bills, volunteering at schools, and everything else that moms do, it’s nice to get that break from my reality.  I am not ashamed at all (well, some shows I watch I should be ashamed of, so says my husband).  I was going to do a Top 5 List, but in this case it seems impossible.  I like too many!!!  Here is my most recent crack list (and I am admitting all – true confessions):
  1. Survivor
  2. The Amazing Race
  3. Big Brother
  4. Teen Mom
  5. 16 & Pregnant
  6. Jersey Shore
  7. The Real World
  8. The Challenge
  9. The Bachelor
  10. The Bachelorette
  11. Bachelor Pad
  12. Celebrity Rehab
  13. House Hunters
  14. Property Virgins
  15. Hoarders
  16. Intervention
  17. Top Chef
  18. The Hills
  19. The City
  20. The Apprentice
  21. The Biggest Loser
  22. Secret Millionaire
  23. Undercover Boss
I will also have to say, I do not watch the Real Housewives series, the Fashion/Runway series, Top Models, American Idol, Dancing with The Stars, America’s Got Talent, etc.  I’m sure I would have enjoyed all of these as well, but there are only so many I can keep watching and fit them into my schedule (I do have a family and two book clubs to keep up with!).  Here is a list of others I have watched in the past (I had to really think about these, and some I’m not too proud of):
  1. Rock of Love (all of them)
  2. The Joe Schmo Show (both)
  3. I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Outta Here!
  4. Flavor of Love
  5. Confessions of a Teen Idol
  6. Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica
  7. The Osbournes
  8. The Mole
  9. Temptation Island
  10. Paradise Hotel
  11. Wife Swap
  12. The Anna Nicole Show
  13. The Surreal Life
  14. Farmer Wants a Wife
  15. The Swan
  16. Celebrity Fit Club
  17. Supernanny
  18. Pimp My Ride
  19. Parental Control
  20. Next
  21. Elimindate
  22. Sober House
  23. Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?
Well, these are just a few throughout the past few years.  I’m sure there are many more since Reality TV as we know it today basically began in 1992 with MTV’s The Real World (yes, I’ve probably seen every season since).  I’m not sure what it is that makes me enjoy these programs more than dramas or comedies on television, but once I get hooked on one then I’m hooked!  It might be the real tears (in some cases) and real drama (again, in some cases) that happens unscripted.  Unfortunately, the “reality” of the shows has become more fake over the past few years, but I do keep watching anyway.
(The original Teen Moms)
Disclaimer: As labeling myself a “junkie,” I guess my addiction is not a true addiction, as I can read books, go out with friends, and hang with the kids and the hubby, all while missing an episode or two.  I will probably check the Internet though to see what I missed, but the “addiction” does not interfere with my normal daily and family life.

* Do you watch Reality TV?  What is your favorite show?  Anyone want to discuss The Bachelor or Teen Mom?

  1. We could be BFF’s! Great & Honest article.

  2. I am a reality TV junkie as well. I love most of the Real Housewives locations. And some of the shows you’ve listed.

  3. I love that you admit it – we all have those dirty little secrets! I’ve actually made it a rule to never watch reality TV and for the most part I’ve managed to miss almost all of it.

  4. I actually like Teen Moms too. It’s a good one!

  5. I had to do a double take, because we have the same name and we sound very similar!!

  6. The only ones I watch are the home improvement shows because I can get the old episodes on HGTV to stream… we don’t have cable or satellite so I don’t watch any reality shows on first run. For a long time I had a Deadliest Catch addiction but not so much any more…

  7. You forgot all of the great ones – Swamp People, Gold Rush, Pawn Stars, American Pickers, Survivorman, Etc… 🙂

  8. I don’t watch too many… really none anymore. I used to watch bachelorette and bachelor religiously. We went through a time with no t.v., so I got out of the habit. Now, I only really watch them if someone reminds me they are on… but if I watch one, I have to watch the whole season! lol I watched the season of the bachelor pad with Jake and Vienna and I was hooked, but haven’t watched it since then. Right now, I prefer game shows like Fear Factor, Wipe Out and Minute to Win it, bc if I miss a week it’s no big deal. 🙂

  9. I only watch Dancing With The Stars, the rest I keep away from so I don’t get hooked. But I will say I do watch a lot of ID (investigative channel).

  11. Oh I get sucked right in too. Love me some texas multimama drama now too. And those real housewives. Love the article

  12. Wow! I had no idea there were so many of them!

  13. I love this post!! You know me and tv. Reading this post as I am watching the People Choice Awards

  14. I try not to get hooked on too many shows, and even less on reality shows, but I love everything HGTV, What Not To Wear, and cake shows.

  15. LOL…I thought I was the ONLY one out there 🙂 I DVR a lot of the shows and you are so right after a day of doing what needs to be done a lil bit of reality tv is all I need 🙂 I even broke down and watched Dance Moms just because I saw a commerical of all the yelling, LOL! Nice article!

  16. Admitting it is the first step, lol! I don’t watch much TV but there are a few on there that I like to watch when I do. I like House Hunters and Property Virgins – we are in a constant state of remodeling, so these shows give me ideas. I watch Hoarders (I might have an obsession with this one) because it makes me feel like a good housekeeper. 🙂 And I like Undercover Boss because it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling and often makes me cry seeing those people’s lives being touched in a way they would never imagined could happen to them.

I can’t watch teen mom . . . I was one 20+ years ago and those girls have no idea what they are getting into . . . breaks my heart.

  17. Confessions of a person who does not own a TV. I have never seen any of these. I have seen some shows on the Food channel when I was house sitting, but none of the others.

  20. wow, I have forgotten abut a lot of those shows but I have to admit I am right there with you, watching [stupid] reality shows. I love me some Teen Mom, Jersey Shore and the Real World Challenges (yay for the new Challenge starting soon!!)

  21. I LOVE Intervention! I could totally talk some Bachelor with you too! Big Brother- HUGE FAN. I might have a problem too…

  22. Wow it would seem you were almost talking about me here! I am a reality show fanatic. My favorites are Big Brother (#1) and then basically anything on Bravo. You are missing out not watching The Real Housewives! 😀

  23. I have never seen most of those, but I love house hunters and property virgins.

  24. wow, I haven’t seen half of these. The funny thing is, all the ones you do not watch are the ones that I do watch.

  25. I watch ANYTHING on HGTV and TLC. I’m a House Hunters JUNKIE. I also like The Millionaire Match Maker SO much. I love Biggest Loser but I only tune in for the weigh-ins and the very last few episodes in their entirety. Other than that, I watch fiction television. I LOVE Parenthood, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Mentalist. Simon Baker is DELICIOUS.

  26. I don’t watch a lot of reality TV. With that said, I am a huge fan of Big Brother. I’ve been watching it since Season 1. I get the feeds every year. My entire summer is consumed with this show *hangs head*. That is why I take the rest of the year off from reality TV. Seriously, it’s an addiction. Stumbled.

  27. Oh my goodness, I never realized how many reality shows I watch until I went through your numbered list! I like 19 of the same shows you listed plus a few others not on your list. Add in the fiction/drama shows I watch like Grey’s Anatomy and a few others and that’s a large amount of hours watching TV. Maybe it never seems like so much because I DVR a lot and watch in my spare time weeks later. Yikes!

  28. Stopping by from the stumble hopped and liked it 🙂
    Thanks,

  29. I too admit that I love reality TV. I don’t get to watch it much though since we downgraded our cable package to save money. But—Stumbled and +1ed this post! Thanks so much for linking up at the Super Sunday Stumble at Why We Love Green!

  30. It was a nice read, sometimes couples in love really take horrible decisions which i have raed in many love confessions on different website online. Happy to read that this was not something like that.
