Great Holiday Books for the Kids – Many Classics

We LOVE reading books at our house, and during the holidays we have some favorite choices! Here is our list of holiday favorites. You may have the same on your shelves, or maybe we might give you an idea for something new! Most of these books can be purchased from Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.

1.  The Night Before Christmas by, Clement C. Moore – This is a classic and must read. Pretty sure everyone out there has a copy, but if you don’t you should purchase one to have in your home!

(Amazon)
2.  Frosty the Snowman by, Steve Rollins, Jack Cowdrey, and Richard Nelson – We actually SING this book together instead of read it. It’s the Frosty song with beautiful, colorful illustrations. A family favorite. It has been harder to find copies over the past few years, but there are some out there.
(Amazon)
3. The Polar Express by, Chris Van Allsburg – Another favorite since my son absolutely loves trains. The illustrations are fantastic, but the story is long. Prepare to settle in to read this one for a while.
(Amazon)
4.  How The Grinch Stole Christmas by, Dr. Seuss – Pretty sure everyone is familiar with the Whos down in Who-ville, and our hearts grow bigger each time we read this classic as well.
(Amazon)
5. The Christmas Story by, Heather Amery – The fun holiday stories are nice, but this one helps us explain to the kids the true meaning behind Christmas and the birth of Jesus. This is an Usborne book. We love Usborne books!

  1. Since this is E’s first Christmas we are planning on making a tradition of reading The Night Before Christmas, The Polar Express (we are going to get a bell too) and reading the Christmas story from the Bible a bit at a time leaving out the parts about “the son of so and so, was the son of so and so, who was the son of so and so, who was the son of so and so”!

  2. Tikki Tikki Tembo was one of my favorites when I was a little girl. My children loved it as well and I sent it to my grandson for his birthday. It’s a shouting book!

  3. The polar express is our favorite book. Hayley just got it and she wont put it down!

  4. I always loved reading “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” and reading the Nativity story straight from the Bible!

  5. We love “Bear Stays Up.” It’s such a cute story!

  6. Love the Grinch! I’ve been reading A Pirates Night Before Christmas to my son lately 🙂 He also likes the Nativity story from his children’s bible.

  7. My mother gifted one of those record your own voice books to my son a couple of years ago. It is Twas The Night Before Christmas and she recorded herself reading it all the way through. Such a classic! And now, a keepsake, too!

  8. We have a tradition of reading several of those on Christmas Eve and on the couple nights just before Christmas as well … another one a friend gave us that is a cute one is called “The Elf on the Shelf” and it is actually a set, not just a book 😀

  9. You definitely listed some GREAT Holiday Books! We love these too…It is fun here where we have short commuter trains, to take the little ones all bundled up with Hot Cocoa and take a train ride and read the Polar Express.
    Great Post!

  10. I can’t wait to have a child to share all these books with 🙂 Cannot wait!!!

  11. We love all kinds of books during Christmas, especially the ones about Jesus, the real meaning of Christmas! :))

  12. I like Snowmen At Night. My daughter loves it and it offers one explanation on why snowmen melt! Now that she really listens and understands stories, I’m going to start the Night Before Christmas.

  13. We love reading Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!
