What is Mommy Reading? – “The Hunger Games”

“The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins is a teen sci-fi novel, so I never thought I would love it as much as I did!  It is an amazing novel and amazing series that I would highly recommend to older teens and adults alike.  It does have a bit of a controversial plot with kids competing to their death in an arena, but the books are so much more than that.  The books are very well written, they make you want to keep reading at the end of each chapter, and in fact at the end of each book.  I had to get each book in the series immediately and read them all back-to-back.  They are that good!  Read them if you haven’t.  If you can stomach a little bit of violence you will love these.  There is a love story/triangle in the books.  The movies will be coming out, so read them first!!!  My favorite was probably the first book, but all are great!

Here is a description of the book (book is 384 pages):

The Hunger Games is a young-adult science fiction novel written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on September 14, 2008, by Scholastic. It is the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy. It introduces sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem where North America once existed. This is where a government working in a central city called the Capitol holds power. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the Capitol chooses one boy and one girl from each of 12 districts to fight to the death. The Hunger Games exist to demonstrate that not even children are beyond the reach of the Capitol’s jurisdiction. Collins says that the idea for The Hunger Games came from channel surfing on television. On one channel she observed people competing on a reality show and on another she saw footage of the Iraq War. The two blended together and the idea for the book was formed.” – Amazon.com

Personal Rating:
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest), I would rate this book a 10.  I really enjoyed the quick pace of the book.  I was always wanting to read the next chapter.  I loved the political issues and futuristic setting.  I loved the “love story.”  I loved the excitement!  Such a great book!  Best series since the Twilight books.  I can’t wait to see how the movie holds up!  Get it now on Amazon for under $5!  Unbelievable price!  Just click on the book on the right sidebar to order!

  7. YVONNE WOODSTOCK says:

I haven’t read any of these books as I only read nonfiction (usually inspirational or spiritual etc) BUT I did see the movie with my soulmate/bff love of my life husband Todd and one of our young adult sons and his girlfriend at the time. We loved the movie and even more so on the big Imax screen! We seen it opening night and even though we bought our tickets ahead of time we still had to wait in line 45 minutes to get a good seat in the theatre because there were so many people. I am looking for the next movie in the series to come out. : )
